Who do you say that I am?

“Regardless of what anyone may personally think or believe about him, Jesus of Nazareth has been the dominant figure in the history of Western culture for almost twenty centuries.”
~ Jaroslav Pelikan, historian

Twenty centuries: perhaps we should not be too quick to dismiss Jesus of Nazareth, or to assume we know precisely who he was.

“Who do you say that I am?”

“In essence … I am looking at Jesus as the disciples were looking at him; to ask the question, who is he? That is the question that runs through all of the Gospels. Of course, some of them give him titles – in Saint Mark’s Gospel he is called the Son of God—but the Gospels keep asking Who is he? Who is he? What is his relationship to the message about the Kingdom of God? His relationship to the will of God?” – Hans Küng
