A “super-slick lying little butthole” still has a tale to tell

“I remember John Perkins. He was a real jerk. A gold-plated, super-slick lying little butthole shill for corporate gangsters; a snake-oil salesman with a movie-star grin, shiny loafers, a crooked calculator and a tooled leather briefcase full of high-blown bullshit.”

John Perkins: Jerk, Con Man, Shill by Greg Palast5 July 2007¹

The book
“Confessions of an Economic Hit Man … provides Perkins’ account of his career with engineering consulting firm Chas. T. Main in Boston. According to Perkins, his role at Main was to convince leaders of underdeveloped countries to accept substantial development loans for large construction and engineering projects that would primarily help the richest families and local elites, rather than the poor, while making sure that these projects were contracted to U.S. companies. Later these loans would give the U.S. political influence and access to natural resources for U.S. companies. He refers to this as an “economic hit man.” Although he states that throughout his career he has always worked for private companies, and suggests a system of corporatocracy and greed, rather than a single conspiracy, he claims the involvement of the National Security Agency (NSA), which he interviewed for a job before joining Main. According to the author, this interview effectively constituted an independent screening which led to his subsequent hiring as an economic hit man by Einar Greve, a vice president of the firm (and alleged NSA liaison).– Wikipedia

For real?
Is “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man” by John Perkins for real? If so, then God help the “Developing world”. I prefer to defer to the likes of putnampit.com and call the book “Confessions of a professional liar” – but Putnam Pit is a lowly Tennessee blogger, and Perkins is – well – what exactly? In an age of fake news how can we tell if fake is fake? The book is scandalous, but not beyond belief. Reviewers seem equally ambivalent:

“I couldn’t believe this is a true story, but talking with my Economics professor
-he reassured me that it was so.”

“Take it for what it is… read it, learn and make up your own mind”

“Perkins’ book makes for good reading, though one’s bullshit detector ought to be turned on at maximum level throughout. More importantly, it would be a good thing for the citizens of this country to re-examine their own history from the very beginning (starting at least with the idea of “manifest destiny” which provided a “justification” for the mass murder of native Americans). It would then appear clear that the US is a complex and contradictory entity, where the highest human ideals live side by side with some of the most egregious instances of violent interference in other countries’ welfare. Perhaps it can’t be otherwise given the nature of human affairs, but at least let’s try to take off the pink goggles from time to time”.

(Rationally Speaking – a blog by Prof. Massimo Pigliucci, a philosopher at the City University of New York – seems reasonably non-fake. I’ll trust Pigliucci on this one.

Confessions of an Economic Hit Man is worth reading: where there’s smoke there is, inevitably, a fire.
